New Year's Resolutions

For most people, the start of the new year brings a multitude of resolutions - the main one being that of eating better and getting fit.  This may have to do with the gluttonous behaviors over the holidays and the resulting shame we inflict upon us.  Either way, gym memberships increase as does the foot traffic into the gym.  But as the month draws to a close, fewer people frequent the gym and begin to fall back on bad habits until their visits become once a week or stop all together.

For me, I gave up resolutions a long time ago.  I just never saw the point.  But I certainly understand the drive to eat better and get fit.  And I certainly understand the ease to making excuses and not wanting to follow through on them.  My main excuse: not having enough time.

A little bit about me:  I am an artist, an author, and I work part time (currently while I continue to search for a full time job).  Because my part time job doesn't pay my bills, I try and supplement my income through the sale of my art and my writing.  This is definitely easier said than done considering that I need to devote a minimum of 40 hours a week for both side jobs.  Add to that a punch-the-clock-working-for-someone-else income and there just aren't enough hours in the day.  So, my sleep and eating habits are affected, while my exercise is down to zero.

As I'm getting older, I realize I cannot continue to neglect my health (because let's face it, without good health, I wouldn't be able to do the things I love), so i am taking on a spring challenge to get back on track!  And in order to keep myself motivated, I have created this blog to hold myself accountable.

As with all things in life, there are no guarantees and I may likely fail in this endeavor.  But life is all about the journey!

Tackling Day 1: Working Out With Pets

I have always found that day 1 of any goal is never the hardest.  Motivation is at the forefront of our psyche and eating right and exercising are a breeze.  Yesterday wasn't that bad.  For once, I didn't forget to eat (this is a side effect of being a writer and an artist...when I get "in the zone" of creating, I lose track of time), and I actually scheduled time to work out.  I'm still waiting for my P90 workout to arrive in the mail, but I have plenty of workouts videos and I decided to pull out my Karen Voight's Yogasculpt as an easy transition into working out.  And I'm happy I chose that one.  There is something to be said for yoga realigning your spine and this morning, I actually work up without the usual back pain I have grown accustomed to. Of course, working out with pets can be challenging.  It is amazing how they can ignore me for hours on end but the minute I put on a movie, or pull out my yoga mat, they want to play.  When I lo...

Temptation

temptation [ tem(p)ˈtāSHən ] NOUN a desire to do something, especially something wrong or unwise There is nothing stronger than the pull of temptation when you are on a diet.  I don't know about you, but when I tell myself I want to eat better, I am usually drawn to the food that I was never interested in before my diet.  But somehow...when I know it is "restricted"...that is when I want to eat ten times of it. Many of the struggles I have heard from friends and loved ones when trying to eat healthier, is the availability of the tempting food within their house.  Living alone makes this easier for me because I am the one in charge of the grocery shopping.  Avoiding the aisles filled with tantalizing delights is a breeze.  This makes it even easier to avoid when I am at home, because it just isn't there for me to eat.  When I have a craving for sweet or salty goodness, I have only fruit or nuts to choose from.  Truth be told, I'm n...

Building a Sustainable Foundation: Health and Fitness Goals for the New Year

As the New Year unfolds, many individuals embark on a journey to improve their health and fitness. However, the key to long-term success lies in the creation of sustainable goals that promote overall well-being. Rather than succumbing to short-lived resolutions, let's explore how to establish realistic and lasting health and fitness objectives for the year ahead. Define Your Why: Before diving into specific goals, take a moment to reflect on your motivation. Understanding the deeper reasons behind your desire for a healthier lifestyle will help you stay committed. Whether it's improving energy levels, preventing health issues, or enhancing your overall quality of life, a clear purpose will serve as a powerful driving force. Set Realistic and Attainable Targets: One common pitfall in goal-setting is the tendency to aim too high, too soon. Start with realistic targets that align with your current fitness level and lifestyle. Gradual progress is more sustainable than drast...
